Window shutters can be either decorative or functional, and often times are both. In addition they add character to any home with longevity. In order to keep your shutters looking their best, routine cleaning are recommended. The good news is that shutters, whether functional or decorative, are very easy to maintain, and cleaning them should be a breeze.
How to Clean your Wood Shutters:
For weekly cleanings, we recommend using the soft brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner hose, to lightly vacuum your shutters to keep them free of excess dust/debris build-up. You may also use a “duster.” For deeper cleanings we recommend using a soft dusting cloth and pledge. Lightly spray the cloth with pledge and wipe in one motion. For those harder to reach areas, use a thick piece of yarn. We recommend doing this no more than every other month. Do not use soap and water to clean wood shutters as the water may damage or warp the wood.
How to clean your Polycore/Woodbury/Synthetic Shutters:
The same as wood shutters, for weekly cleanings, we recommend using the soft brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner hose, to lightly vacuum your shutters to keep them free of excess dust/debris build-up. You may also use a “duster.” In a bucket, combine warm water and dish soap to form a sudsy cleaning solution (about 1 teaspoon of dish soap to 1 quart of water). Dampen cloth in sudsy water, and wash the shutters thoroughly. Dampen your second cloth with clean (non-sudsy) water, and rinse away any soap residue. For those harder to reach areas, use a soft brush.
